ACUPUNCTURE FAQ’S

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture needles are flexible and almost as thin as a human hair. They are nothing like hypodermic needles used to give injections. For the vast majority of patients, acupuncture is a pleasant and pain-free experience.

Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, so it is possible that you may experience some mild, momentary discomfort similar to a mosquito bite or a mild ache.

My goal is to make your experience deeply relaxing and healing. I will ask for your feedback throughout the procedure to ensure that you feel comfortable.

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is an ancient method of healing that works on an energetic principle of the body. Life force energy, called Qi (chee), flows through a series of interconnected channels throughout the body. Disharmony of this flow of Qi causes illness and pain. Acupuncture helps to redirect and correct the flow of energy through these channels for healing.

In modern terms, Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system which helps to correct and help heal imbalances naturally. It helps to release endorphins, increase circulation and relax muscles.

Are results just the placebo effect?

Thousands of legitimate medical studies have shown that Acupuncture has a real and measurable effect on the brain and nervous system. Expectations do affect outcomes in any type of medical intervention wether it's traditional or complimentary medicine, prescription drugs or herbs.  Acupuncture and herbal medicine even work on animals who don’t have any expectations of healing - so there are tangible physical effects on the body regardless of beliefs.

What can Acupuncture treat?

The World Health Organization recognizes more than 30 conditions that Acupuncture has been shown to treat successfully in controlled studies. Some of the most common issues I treat are chronic pain, headaches, infertility, insomnia, menstrual issues, fatigue, menopause, rosacea, morning sickness, eczema, depression, anxiety, digestive issues, Bell’s Palsy, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, TMJ, Shingles, induce labor, sinusitis, common colds/flu and cough.

You don’t have to be sick or in pain to enjoy the benefits of Acupuncture! I have many clients who love the increased relaxation and well-being that Acupuncture provides them. Regular treatments are a great way to boost immunity, manage stress, improve well-being and energy levels.

Is Acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is very safe for adults and children if performed by a licensed practitioner. Acupuncture has a very low risk of injury, infection or side effects, and can help improve outcomes of other treatments. Licensed acupuncturists receive a minimum of 3 years training including traditional biomedicine and supervised clinical shifts prior to passing state board exams.  Your licensed acupuncturist understands the anatomy of your body and the precise needling requirements specific to each area.

I have received four years of training and earned a Master’s degree in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture before I became a practitioner. I am licensed by the State Medical Board of Ohio and take your safety and well-being very seriously.

Does insurance cover Acupuncture?

I am a certified BWC provider and am also credentialed with the VA. I currently do not process any private insurance, but I am happy to provide you with the paperwork needed to submit your own claim. Some insurance companies do cover Acupuncture for certain things, but you will need to contact your company directly to confirm coverage. Some FSA funds can be used for your visits if your employer offers this. But again, you will need to contact your employer/Human Resources to confirm this.

How long is an Acupuncture session?

It varies depending on the patient’s needs, but most regular Acupuncture sessions are about 30 minutes long. The length of time you will rest with needles inserted is usually 20-25 minutes. Your first session will take a little longer due to paperwork and evaluation.

May I have my friend/loved one observe my session?

Generally I do not allow others in the room to observe your acupuncture session unless you're under 18.

If you need help dressing/undressing and/or getting situated prior to treatment you may have someone in the room but I will typically ask them to leave before the treatment begins. If you must have someone present with you in order to feel comfortable, please let me know ahead and I will accommodate you.

I understand the curiosity your friends and loved ones may have, but the fewer distractions the better. More successful outcomes are achieved when we approach your treatment with the reverence it deserves. I greatly appreciate your understanding with this.

How long does Acupuncture take to work?

Acupuncture works with your own body’s healing ability and this can vary greatly from patient to patient. Some patients feel better after only one treatment, while others may need prolonged treatments to achieve success.

After your evaluation and first treatment, I will be able to give you a recommended time-frame based on your symptoms and overall health. A general ballpark recommendation for most new patients is two sessions per week for three weeks, then reducing frequency after that.

Do I have to undress for Acupuncture?

This will depend on what areas will be treated based on your symptoms. The most commonly used acupuncture points are located on the limbs, so undressing is often not necessary. I do recommend wearing loose fitting and comfortable clothing to your appointment. If undressing is necessary a gown or sheet will be provided to you.  I will always respect your comfort and modesty.

Am I supposed to leave a tip for the Acupuncturist?

No, Acupuncture is not a tipped profession.
